Eunice’s nurse matter-of-factly checked Eunice for a pulse, read the monitor, and made some notes on a clipboard. Then she unplugged the monitors, removed the IV from Eunice’s arm. “She’s gone,” the nurse said. “Would you both like a few moments alone with her? I have to call the funeral home and have them come to pick her up.”
Adam nodded. “Just a few minutes would be good.” He was shaking. Adam brushed his hand across Eunice’s cheek. “Thank you for teaching me what I’m not sure I would have learned without you,” he said, lips quivering and tears trickling down his cheeks. Jen wrapped her around Adam from behind and he pressed them tightly against his chest.
When Jen and Adam got back into Adam’s car, they began to drive aimlessly.
“Tell each other what?” Jen asked, when Adam was a few blocks from Eunice’s. “What do you think she meant by that?”
“I’m falling in love with you, Jen. I know we haven’t been together very long, but...That’s what she wanted me to tell you.”
Jen froze for a moment, then pulled Adam toward her, took his cheeks between her hands, and kissed him.
