CHAPTER 23
Rob looked possessed. He tracked Adam down at Jeff’s house, where the Swing Daddies were preparing for the finals of the State Fair Talent Show later that evening.
“Jen told me I’d find you here,” Rob said to Adam outside Jeff’s garage.
“We’ve got the talent show tonight. I don’t have long,” Adam said. He was a bit on edge. The act wasn’t perfect yet.
“I won’t keep you long. I wanted to talk to you about what happened with me and Cooper this morning.”
“You don’t need to explain anything to me. There are two sides to every story. You’re my friend and always will be.”
“I didn’t just storm out of there, you know,” Rob said defensively. Rob and Adam moved to the backyard, where there was a small concrete bench to the left of a square flower garden that Jeff’s mother had worked on forever. “I freaked out. The thought of fatherhood hadn’t entered my mind before this morning. I had barely thought of having a long-term relationship with Cooper.”
“I don’t think anyone knows how they’d react in a situation like that. I know I wouldn’t.”
“What would you do if you got Jen pregnant?”
“Not a good example because I’d be kind of happy.”
“Are you ready to be a father?”
“I don’t know if anyone is ever ready the first time, but I could handle it.”
“What should I do?” Rob asked, not even listening to Adam’s answer. He was searching for a solution that could be provided in the same amount of time it took EPT to hand down a verdict. He stared into the small garden, hoping that from the rosebushes and perennials a solution would appear.
