CHAPTER 32
Last week of December 2005
Adam had spoken to Shawna a few times since he’d returned to Vegas. She was coming for New Year’s. Based on the time-zone difference and the flight schedule, she’d arrive at the Americana in time for the last few songs. Shawna’s pending trip dulled the pain of losing Jen. Adam still hadn’t returned Jen’s call, the one she’d made while he was in New York. He had wanted to call, but with each day that passed, he knew less and less about what to say. Moving on had never been so hard.
At least Adam’s alter ego was living well. Vince Velenzio and the Swing Daddies had become a hot ticket in town. There was Danny Gans at the Rio, “O” at the Bellagio, and quietly the Swing Daddys were packing them in, but it was still by word-of-mouth. That was until a reporter from the Las Vegas Sun took his parents to the show for their 40th wedding anniversary. For the first couple of weeks of performances, the Americana had basically given away tickets to the high rollers it was trying to lure from the other hotels. That was the way Vegas worked. People who gambled big were treated like royalty. Since many of the high rollers the Americana was attracting were in their late 40s to mid-60s, the Swing Daddies were just the kind of entertainment they were looking for. Once they started recommending the show to their friends, and the popularity of the Swing Daddies grew
On Christmas morning, Adam was still sleeping in his luxurious suite when Burt Winter called.
“How’s the hottest new act in town this morning?” Burt asked, barely able to contain his glee. It was hard to believe that he had once been against Adam becoming a singer and giving up law.
“I’m well, Dad. What’s up?”
“Haven’t you seen it?”
