CHAPTER 6
Adam checked the email — for the twentieth time in four hours. Still nothing
from Zoë. It had been two weeks since she’d written. An unanswered email and a
disconnected phone.
What the hell was going on with this girl?
Yes, Adam should have been slaving away for Kaplan, Rubens & Squire, but getting Zoë back into his life seemed a bit more important than tormenting Old Man Moody and his minions. In the midst of tracking Zoë down, Adam was also getting deeply involved with Tracie’s case.
According to directory assistance, Zoë’s parents still lived in Winnipeg. He picked up the phone. There had to be some rational explanation. Zoë wouldn’t just email him and then ignore him for two weeks. Maybe Zoë fell on some tough times and moved back home.
As the phone rang, Adam thought of all the cute things he was going to say when Zoë answered.
“Hello?” A barely audible, weak and hesitant voice was on the end of the line.
“Hi, I’m a friend of Zoë’s, Adam Winter. Can you tell me, please…”
“Hang on.” The woman was crying.
“Hello?” said a male voice. Zoë’s father.
“Hi, I’m Adam Winter, a friend of Zoë’s. I’ve been trying to get in touch with her for the past —”
“Is this a joke?”
“What? No. She emailed me two weeks ago on February 16. But, I haven’t heard from —”
