“That story reminds me of one of my oldest girlfriends from home. She was really into guys at that age and always seemed to have power over them.”
“What does she do now?”
“She died recently in a car accident,” Cooper said sorrowfully.
“I’m sorry.”
Jen didn’t know that she was wearing Zoë’s dress.

Adam had been unable to function since getting off the phone with Zoë’s parents. Most of the aspiring junior partners were still at KR&S slaving away. All Adam could do was stare out his window. He knew he’d unrealistically gotten his hopes up for Zoë. But his gut told him that this time it was going to be different. In his mind he had played out the scene at the airport when she would get off the plane and that smile, the creamy skin, and the faint scent of Apple Pectin would dance back into his life.
Who would play such a cruel joke on him? Who would let him think about soul mates only to have the one he wanted be still married — and dead. Adam turned on the radio.
“…by request, here’s ‘Somewhere There’s a Someone’ by Dean Martin….”
Great. Rub it in.
Dean’s smooth voice was interrupted by one of the firm’s founders, Donald Squire, rapping on the oversized door. Squire’s perfectly groomed salt-and-pepper hair and hint of jowls made him the poster boy for country club members everywhere.
Adam dove to turn down the radio. “Sorry, Mr. Squire.”
