“More light a White Knight thing. She’s the damsel in distress.”
“So does that make you Sir Fuckalot?”
Adam didn’t crack a smile.
“Sorry, I couldn’t resist. Has anything even happened yet?”
“We kissed, but I think she wants more. I’m going out with her tonight.”
“I guess we’ll see how good your managerial skills are.”
“Well, so far all I have is a nutso closer and an unproven player. Impressive, huh?”

Tracie hadn’t been on a real date in almost five years — not since her first one with Tony, which was nothing more than dinner at Applebee’s, renting a movie and fooling around on Tony’s waterbed. She wasn’t even sure if going out tonight with Adam was a date — it was sort of a “let’s just meet for a drink” type of night. Their lawyer-client relationship made even a simple date not so simple. And after being with Tony for so long, Tracie’s self-esteem was tattered. She just couldn’t allow herself to believe that Adam was interested in her.
“You look pretty, Mommy,” Willem said, watching her intently while standing on the toilet seat.
“You’re such a sweet boy,” she said, crouching down to kiss him on the forehead. “Do you remember our friend Adam?”
“With the ‘puter in his office? We saw him when you had the owie on your face, ‘member, Mommy?”
She thought Willem hadn’t noticed. “How’d you get so smart?” she said, dabbing a little lipstick on the tip of his nose, hoping the subject would change.
