“Oh…them…that couple over there. It reminds me of us at Manny’s,” Jen smiled.
“Yeah, that was a fun night.”
Reminiscing about the good times would kill some time until their orders were taken. It only lasted three minutes. “So, what do you think, Jen?”
Startled that they’d be having a relationship talk before they had even ordered, Jen floundered for how to begin. She wasn’t prepared to play Kevorkian yet. “Well…first I just want you to know that you’re great. I’ve learned a lot about myself from being with you. I just don’t know…”
“I meant, what are you planning on ordering? I thought we’d split some stuff. I was thinking about the beef enchiladas. What the hell did you think I was talking about?”
“I’m sorry, Quint. I thought you were talking about us.” Kevorkian had entered the building.
“What about us? Is something wrong?”
Kevorkian had left the building. “No, nothing’s wrong. We just haven’t been talking that much lately. That’s all. I mean, I think everything is okay, don’t you? I know we’re both busy…”
“Yeah, school’s been a bitch lately. Do you want to order some nachos?” Quint wanted to bury the topic.
“Only if we get jalapenos on them.”
“Great idea.”
Finally, something in common.
Break-up tension joined Quint and Jen for dinner, without taking up any extra room at the table. He stayed throughout the meal, and even though he didn’t say a word, he influenced the rest of the night.
