“Is there enough space for me and you?”
“Yes.”
“Then it’s all we need.”
Tracie hugged him tightly.
The building was a three-story brick building in a marginal part of Minneapolis. It was far from the life Tracie had known, but it was all she could afford. Even though she was left with virtually nothing, Tracie was able to make the apartment feel like a home. Pictures of her and Willem in cute little frames were everywhere.
“Do you want a tour?” she asked.
“Sure.”
“To your right is the kitchen. We’re standing in the living room, dining room, and my bedroom. Yep, it is a versatile room. Thank God for futons and folding chairs. And Willem is in the bedroom to the left. With everything that’s happened to us, I thought it was important for him to have a place of his own where he could feel safe.”
“You’re an amazing person,” Adam said as he leaned over to kiss her.
“Why?”
“You just are. Not many people could keep going after what you’ve been through, but you do.”
“I don’t have a choice. Willem is my life.”
Adam loved the person that Tracie was. He admired her so much, knowing that he could never have survived her life. They kissed again and fell onto the futon.
“Ouch! Dammit!” Adam yelled as he looked to see what had speared him in the back.
